The Business Unit is the world’s leader for coating systems for optical storage media. We are a global leader in the creation of production systems for the semiconductor industry. Our systems are used to coat wafers in microchip production.

The business unit employs around 250 people worldwide, mainly in Europe and North America. Global support is provided through two technology centers - St. Petersburg (USA) and Balzers (Liechtenstein) - plus sales and service locations worldwide.
Products & Solutions
From leading-edge sputtering to state-of-the-art production lines, Data Storage supplies high quality, reliable and cost-effective solutions for all formats.
- Sprinter - for DVD-RAM DVD-RW, DVD+RW and CD-RW
- Cube Star - for CD R/DVD R
- Swivel, Cube Lite - Metallizers for CD, CD-R, DVD9 and DVD-R as well as mastering applications
Oerlikon Wafer Processing primarily targets the following market segments:
- Advanced Packaging: Metallization processes for wafer-level packaging technologies such as flip chip
- Thin Wafer and Multi-Level Metallization: Ultra-thin wafer backside metallization, as well as CMOS and BiCMOS multi-level metallization
- Photomask Etching: Dry etch processes used in the production of photomasks, down to the 45nm node for chrome, MoSi and quartz.
- Compound Semi, MEMS & Nanotechnology: Telecommunications and optical applications, including III-Vs, II-Vis, solid state lighting, sensors, inkjets, accelerometers, microfluidics and thin film heads.
