Oerlikon stands for innovation in the world’s important technology markets.
The Oerlikon group is focusing its competencies in the six different Segments Oerlikon Textile, Coating, Solar, Vacuum, Drive Systems and Advanced Technologies. The core competency is the thin-film surface and interface coating in nanometer range. With our products and services we are in leading positions in the respective markets: No. 1 in coating solutions, production plants for thin-film silicon solar modules, textile machinery and niches for drive systems; No. 2 in the area of vacuum technology.
Our innovative technologies enable us to venture into fascinating future markets. For example clean technologies and advanced nanotechnology are playing a part, which is getting more and more important. In 2010, the share of sales with clean technology products amounted to 18 percent - especially plants for the production of solar modules, transmissions for wind turbines or electric cars and also vacuum pumps as a part of solar equipment.
Oerlikon's high-tech applications are to be found nearly everywhere - in engines, tires, machines, countless textile products or solar panels as well as in science laboratories, MP3 players, beamers or Tetra Paks. We develop products and technologies that inspire people and create added value for our customers - whether on earth or on the way to new worlds and dimensions.

Research and development (R&D) form the heart of our company. Nearly 1200 top scientists shape the future of technology at Oerlikon. In the first half year 2010, the investments in R&D amounted to around CHF 122 million. This equals a share of sales of 7.8 percent. A new Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) advises Oerlikon in the direction of the research and the selection of innovation projects. Oerlikon is very proud that recognized scientists under the chairmanship of Prof. Werner Martienssen joined this council. The SAB makes a vital contribution to linking Oerlikon to cutting-edge research worldwide.
